“One Hundred Sixty Eight”
It does not matter if you are rich or poor, young or old. It does not matter if you live in America or Argentina. Tick Tock! Tick Tock! Time marches on.
Harvey Mackay said, “Time is free, but it is priceless. You can’t own it, but you can use it. You can’t keep it, but you can spend it. Once you’ve lost it, you can never get it back.”
One Hundred Sixty Eight!! That is how many hours you have in a week! That is how many hours I have in a week. The question is, how do we use these hours?
Robert Orbin once stated, “Time flies. It’s up to you to be the navigator.”
I look at my life in FOUR MAIN AREAS!! Before I share the four areas that I focus on each day, I want to mention two websites that are very helpful. Check these out and I guarantee you that they will bless your heart.
This is the most important way I invest a portion of my 168 hours each week. I wake up every morning at 5:15. I have set my coffee up the night before so I just press that awesome green button. Within minutes I have a pot of Maxwell House that is piping hot! However, while it is brewing I read two daily devotionals. The first is “My Utmost for His Highest” by OswaId Chambers. I have been reading it for years. My morning would not be the same without it. The second daily devotional is “Daily with the King” by Glyn Evans. I really enjoy his thoughts and find myself reflecting on them throughout the day.
The next thing I do, with coffee in hand, is my Bible reading. I use the youversion.com app. I read this on my kindle or ipad. It really does not take that long each day to read the Bible in a year! I read during this time just to feed myself spiritually. This is not sermon preparation for me.
After my Bible reading I enter into prayer. I use a prayer journal. This helps me to remain focused. I also love to look back over it from time to time and rejoice over answered prayer. During this prayer time, I simply just talk to God. That is what my good friend, Phil Brockwell, teaches our children at White Oak Baptist. “Prayer is just TALKING TO GOD” he says!
I also love to watch sermons while I have my Special K cereal. I watch Dr. Ken Duggan and Dr. Jeremy Roberts. I follow along with them in my Bible as they preach. I watch my friend, Dr. Chris Stephens, as well. These men bless my blesser!
To be honest…this has been up and down throughout the years. I am more consistent now. The older I get (51 as of this writing) I understand the need to invest a portion of my 168 hours working out. During the summers I love to swim and bike. I also work out at Planet Fitness. I try to hit the gym three times a week. I love to walk/run four to five miles about four days a week. I do this in our neighborhood. If everything goes well, I do my running early in the morning after my quiet time. Leslie, Daniel and I go to the gym together in the evenings. I feel so much better after each workout.
I realize how important rest is for the body, mind and soul. This is difficult for me because I am WIRED!!! I have one gear!!! I get up every morning like I have been shot out of a cannon. I have never napped. I am afraid I will miss something! I do not really like to go to bed at night. But, again, the older I get the more I understand the need to rest. I now get to bed at ten every night. I have not seen the end of a Monday night football game in years. If I get the rest that I need, I am fresh all day long. If not, I drag!
I also set my week up to spend time with my wife! We try to go out on a weekly date. I am thankful for Leslie’s aunt Bren. She watches our son on Friday evenings so Les and I can catch a movie and have dinner. One of the most helpful things that I do is that I calendar my week.
Eugene Peterson said, “The appointment calendar is THE tool with which to get unbusy!”
At the beginning of each week I look my calendar over and make sure that I am taking time for my God, my wife and myself.
I once heard Johnny Hunt say that the majority of men do not read another book after high school. That is hard for me to believe and even more difficult to understand. I feel like one of the GREATEST blessings in life is to be able to read. I usually read a book every week or two. I always have one book, and most of the time two books going at the same time.
Another way to grow intellectually is to listen to podcast. I listen while I run and while I am taking a shower and getting ready every morning. I have a 35 minute commute every morning and afternoon and have found this is a great time to listen to a podcast. There are so many wonderful podcast out there on every subject known to man.
